2008 DAY OF CARING
What?
-
Day of Caring is a one-day, community-wide volunteer event that allows
United Way donors an opportunity to see first-hand where their
contributions are going and who their dollars are helping. It
connects volunteer
groups from local business and industry with non-profit agencies in need
of assistance. It is the best, most organized way for individuals to
make a difference in their community.
More than 300 volunteers from more than 30
area businesses and organizations are expected to participate in this
event. Day of Caring will be the most visible United Way project of the
year!
When?
-
Friday, May 9, 2008. Kick-off breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Projects should
begin by 9:15 a.m. The time commitment for each project will vary from
4-6 hours.
Why?
-
Projects offer volunteers a first-hand opportunity to learn about health
and human service needs in northwest Louisiana. Possible projects may
include repairing playground equipment at local day care centers,
reading to children in elementary schools, stocking shelves at an area
food bank, cleaning yards for the elderly and much more.
-
On-site projects show volunteers the broad reach of United Way in the
community.
-
Service projects generate favorable media coverage for the company.
-
Participating in this service day will enhance team spirit and employee
morale.
-
The
day offers a greater understanding of how commitment of time and money
work together to make a difference in the community.

Higher Ground
Project - Allendale |

United Way of
Northwest Louisiana is always working to find solutions for
major obstacles facing
people in our community. suitable
and safe housing is a critical and ongoing need for so many
people here. This year, United Way invested $100,000 and
secured $100,000 in matching funds from community partners for
the Fuller Center for Housing Project. Four new homes were
built in the Allendale community for deserving new home owners
who put in many hours themselves to help with construction. |
211: New Partner Agency
After the hurricanes in 2005, we
saw an increasing need to establish a central point of
information for people seeking social service assistance. After
much research and discussion with other United Ways funding
similar initiatives, United Way of Northwest Louisiana added
Centerpoint 211 as a partner agency. This new program
allows a person to call one central number which will connect
them to the services they are seeking. We worked with
agency directors, both local and state-wide to implement the
program and provide the essential funding required to ensure its
success.
